The veteran Afro-Cuban group Sierra Maestra, an outstanding nine piece band from Havana Cuba, will perform for
North Wales salsa fans at Denbigh Town Hall on Saturday 19th June. Doors open at 8pm.
Sierra Maestra have been internationally acclaimed stars of Cuban music since the late 1970's and were the first
group, and remain the best of the modern era, to play in the old-style line up: tres, guitar, trumpet, bongo,
guiro and vocals. Their pioneering work re-introduced son into the Cuban mainstream and paved the way for the
worldwide boom in Cuban music including the smash hits of Buena Vista Social Club.
The band first performed in 1976 at Havana University where the group members were all students. Since then
they have produced fourteen albums and performed at prestigious venues throughout the world. Last year they
topped the bill at Britain's premier jazz festival in Brecon. This will be their third visit to Denbigh, their
last was ten years ago, and a chance for Welsh salsa fans to once again enjoy the best in Cuban casino dance.
Cymru Cuba's salsa nights are now a regular part of the Denbigh festival and again this year there will be salsa
workshops during the day designed with beginners in mind.
